It all started when…
SOULDEGA: How did you get started in creating fashion from repurposed items?
ARTPHOSOUL: Well it started the first time I got my first hand me down. Someone donated clothes to my family after a fire we had. And I remember searching in these big garbage bags and picking out a woman’s suit jacket. It wasn’t age appropriate at the time . But I fount a way to make it into something unique to wear.
SOULDEGA: We really love your unique wired eyewear pieces. Can you explain what the design process is like when constructing a piece?
ARTPHOSOUL: Thank you, I appreciate that ! I like to gather and collect various metals and items that I have found to use as materials for my work. I then look at the structure, shape, and color of a persons eye, study the face . And from there I begin the design process of using recycled materials spontaneously. I like to think of my creative process as adornment.
SOULDEGA: You would often collaborate with performance artists creating pieces for live showcases. Usually, how would those experiences be like for you?
ARTPHOSOUL: Creating for a performance artist is a very exhilarating yet focused process. It gives me a chance to have creative freedom which I love. I began first by studying the persons artistry, their music, style , and persona . And from there I could spend hours visualizing how I can create and add to their vibe.
SOULDEGA: How do you feel your creative process has changed during this trying time?
ARTPHOSOUL: Not much at all really, creativity is such a central part of who I am. I don’t really change with the times in terms of creating more or less. But it is nice to have more time to day dream and tap into that side of me.
SOULDEGA: Can you name a few designers or creators who have influenced or inspired your development?
ARTPHOSOUL: I feel like I am like a sponge. I am inspired by everything around me. But, I really admire Rei Kawakubo for her outrageous genius. The first time I saw her work I began to understand myself more and to allow my own eclectic uniqueness to shine unapologetically.
SOULDEGA: If you could design eyewear for any artist in the world (living or deceased) who would it be?
ARTPHOSOUL: I would like to design a wearable art piece for the Queen of the Met Gala, Anna Wintour.
