Soulfile with Drew Duruji

So however I feel at the moment I try to capture that and put it in my music. Kind of like watching a movie on mute but the captions is on.

It all started when…

SOULDEGA: When did you start diving into the music and photography mediums and what inspired you?

DREW: Music runs in my family so I’ve been playing with it since I was 14 yrs old but I didn’t start making beats seriously until after high school when I got a laptop as a graduation gift. Then there my friends inspired me. Then I got into photography last year. But I’ve always loved photography. When I was a kid I use to stay on Getty images looking up my favorite artists fits or athletes.

SOULDEGA:  What are the stories you like to tell in your photography and music?

DREW: Well in my photography I like to capture the things I see everyday in my neighborhood, colors, to even documenting my friends. And for music it’s a lifestyle thing for me. So however I feel at the moment I try to capture that and put it in my music. Kind of like watching a movie on mute but the captions is on.

SOULDEGA: What has been your most favorite project you have worked on thus far?

DREW: My favorite projects I worked on musically are “Catherine’s Yute” by Titilola. “Atmos Trap” by Matt Tha Outlaw. Both my bro’s y’all should check it out. Then recently Yatta did a campaign for Bone Soda from the UK that I was thankful to be a part of. I also had a photo exhibit earlier this year in February.

SOUDEGA: What was the meaning behind the track “Searching” in your musical project “In Search of” ?

DREW: Nothing too serious I just sampled Roy Ayers - Searching lol

SOULDEGA: How has the current social and political climate affected you artistically?

DREW: It actually helped more than anything. As far as the whole pandemic thing. I’ve had more time to be at my own pace. Being able to create when I want more so than making time to create. Also reflecting on how I’ve been spending my time and energy. Then with the whole social injustice problem we’re going through. It’s been kind of heavy for me. Artistically I don’t think it affected me but as an Black man it hurts to see that we’re still fighting this battle.

SOULDEGA: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

DREW: In 5 years I see myself creating a platform for young black creatives who need resources. I want to get into making (movies) films. Maybe start a family even, but mainly I just want to help my people win.
