SOULDEGA: When did you begin rapping? And how would you describe you’re flow?
HONEY: I started rapping at like 14. I would just freestyle at parties or with the homies or whatever. I'd describe my flow as like... loopy. I dunno, I'm super inspired by rappers like Andre 3000, Twista, JID... I love just staying on the beat even if I ain't talking about shit. It's about a voice thing for me, a tone thing. .
SOULDEGA: What does the recording process look like for you?
HONEY: My process can look different depending on the beat or whatever. Usually, I'm just going through beats online. When I find one I like I'll record a melody then fill that in with lyrics. But sometimes I'll listen to a beat and write specifically for that beat.
SOULDEGA: Who are you're top three female rappers? And how have they made a creative impact on you?
HONEY: Missy Elliot is actually the only one. I like other female rappers but not like that. Missy showed me that creativity comes first. Like, fuck what an "industry" is asking for. She said fuck all that and just did her. And that rebellion actually caused her to be one of the most influential human beings in the world. .
SOULDEGA: What was the first song you wrote? And what was the inspiration behind the track?
HONEY: I don't know the first song I wrote. But the first song I ever put out was "Cheerios." That song is about not losing the child in you despite how fucked up the world is. It's about remaining playful and fun.
SOULDEGA: Have you ever experienced any creative writing blocks? If so, how do you approach those challenges?
HONEY: Yeah, all the time. I don't have a solution. I usually just get really down on myself and then when it goes away I make something cool and I forget I ever had a creative block. But when I'm having a block, I also forget I ever made cool shit. .
SOULDEGA: If you were a fly on the wall in a recording session, what Artist would you want to be observing and why?
HONEY: Kendrick. He's got it all, man. Like... I see no flaws creatively... It always leaves me like... HOW?
