On Jean-Andre Antoine

SOULDEGA: How long have you been shooting film photography and where did it all begin?

JEAN-ANDRE: I’ve been shooting film photography since about 2003, so going on 16 years. I took my first photography course at Hostos Community college in the Bronx which is where I also first picked up a film camera. From then I’ve been hooked. .

SOULDEGA: When did you realize that Polaroid photography was your niche?

JEAN-ANDRE: It kinda just happened. I never looked at Polaroid photography as being a “niche”. It’s been an organic process that just grew as I kept at it.

SOULDEGA: How has doing polaroids in the streets of Nyc shaped you? Also, what are some of the pros and cons of working outside with the general public?

JEAN-ANDRE: I think it allows me to be more open, a little more worldly. Especially since I am dealing with different types of people on a regular basis. With that said I don’t always know what’s coming or when it’s coming so I guess that can be a pro or a con. A pro in that it keeps me on my toes and ready for my next subject or next shot. And a con could be not knowing when those moments can happen and being a bit on edge of not knowing how each interaction will go. Also the art of presentation and what’s the best angle to take from person to person.

SOULDEGA: This past April You were featured in The NY Times, also you’ve had features with Nike, and most recently an Air Bnb ad. How have those experiences been for you?

JEAN-ANDRE: They have been humbling. It also has been thought provoking because it now makes me think about a whole other side of my career that I never really thought about before or was familiar with. It's become inspiration for me to go harder.

SOULDEGA: Outside of your Polaroid work you shoot a lot of street photography with 35mm film. How does that medium differ from your Polaroid work? Where do you plan to take your 35mm work?

JEAN-ANDRE: My Polaroid work has become my main medium and means of living. So it’s taken in a very calculated, thought out way. Whereas with my 35mm work I am able to let loose and capture life as I see it and as it comes to me. Because I’m on the move I get a lot of different types of aspects that I am able to capture. 35 has always been my go to. I’m not sure where I want to take it..It’s a more personal and intimate medium for me.

SOULDEGA: Lastly, if you could shoot a Polaroid of anyone in the world, (living or deceased) who would it be?

JEAN-ANDRE: Malcolm X
