Soulfile: Magdaline Davis

Soulfile with Magdaline Davis

I’m inspired by the truth, and I’m intrigued by human condition and just “rules” and questioning everything.

It all started when…

SOULDEGA: How did you begin working in the collage medium?

MAGDALINE : I’ve always loved collages. My sisters and mom would cut up magazines and make collages. I used to cut up fashion magazines and make collage photo albums. In 2014 I did a series of drawings titled “once upon a portrait” of woman’s faces that I sketched and added different shaped/ patterned magazine cut outs for the background. I began doing my conceptual collages in 2016.

SOULDEGA: Your collages have powerful messages. What is the inspiration behind your pieces?

MAGDALINE: I’m inspired by the truth, and I’m intrigued by human condition and just “rules” and questioning everything.

SOULDEGA: Would you consider your work to be controversial?

MAGDALINE: I think it depends on who’s viewing it. My work questions but it also answers. I do think my pieces have strong meaning behind them but I don’t strive to be controversial. I just make what speaks to me in the moment.

SOULDEGA: What’s the best part about collaging for you? What’s the most challenging?

MAGDALINE: Placing my subjects, and glueing them on the paper. Once the glue is against that paper, it’s complete! I don’t have any challenges when it comes to my collages. I’m just always having so much fun even when I think something is flawed and I can’t fix it.

SOULDEGA: What’s your favorite collage or series you’ve done?

MAGDALINE: I’m currently crushing on my latest piece “on display”. The imagery + the concept and contrast is amazing to me and makes me proud that I made it.

SOULDEGA: Who is your favorite collage artist and why?

MAGDALINE: I don’t necessarily have a favorite collage artist right now. I love different artists for different reasons. However, I’ve been really enjoying @gregaime_art latest works.
