Soulfile with Natasha Duke

I think the emotions and story in the illustration are very important. Just a beautiful image is emptiness.

It all started when…

SOULDEGA: When did you realize that Visual Art was going to be your career path?

NATASHA: I have always worked in the field of art and design. I have a lot of experience: interior design, graphic design, art mosaic, work in a weekly magazine. All this time, drawing was my hobby. I did not understand how I can make money from it. A few years ago, I began to make portraits for a modest gain. I remember that my first reward for the portrait was $ 20. I was happy, for me it was a small victory. Because for a long time I was embarrassed and ashamed to take money for my work. I could not accept the fact that this is work, time, experience, part of my soul, my feelings, my view of the world, this is my profession and I must take money for it.

SOULDEGA: What other Art mediums do you combine with illustration and how do they feed off of each other?

NATASHA: Now I often do simple animations. I often work with musicians and make animated covers for them for music tracks. This is used on social networks. I try to complicate the projects, I hope in the near future I will be able to make a big complex work in the form of an animated music video. Working with musicians is something special for me. I like music very much. Unfortunately, I cannot sing and have no musical talent. But I can do the visual part to the music that excites me.

SOULDEGA: Who are three of your favorite Artists and how have they inspired you're works?

NATASHA: Of course I love Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Frank Miller. I am very inspired by the work of photographer Steven Klein, I consider him a genius, and his work is the embodiment of expression.

SOULDEGA: We noticed your comic aesthetic and attention to female subjects. What inspires this creative approach?

NATASHA: I love the aesthetics of comics, it's always a little story. Often in one picture you see the whole life and experience of the hero. I think the emotions and story in the illustration are very important. Just a beautiful image is emptiness.
As for women .... I am a woman and each of these women lives in me. I can tell you as sincerely as possible about what is familiar to me.

SOULDEGA: Have you collaborated with any other artists in different mediums?  If so, What was your favorite project?

NATASHA: Yes, most often these are musicians. One of my favorite projects in music was the project for the group «stains of a sun flower" for the song Jennifer. I was very inspired by the project for the great nutrition network of Peter Jones from the USA. I made the cover of his book for him. In fact, I love all my projects. For me they are all special.  In May, I want to do a joint project with the guys from Australia «Breathe». These are great musicians. I hope that we will do something special.

SOULDEGA: If you were commissioned to do a Female Super Hero Comic Book, Who would be you're muse for the character and what would her Super Powers consist of?

NATASHA: It is difficult for me to answer this question, because in my works a woman is not a hero, this is a woman with emotions. I just use a style that has a lot in common with comics. I want the zhenzin to remain a woman and this is her main superpower.
